The heart of an artist

The heart of an artist is to express creative concepts tangibly. Matt’s material of choice has always been timber. Drawn to the broad ways it can be experienced through the senses - the uniqueness of each species, the differences in smell, the way it can be shaped or the sound of planing. Matt is inspired by the possibilities.

Matt’s interest in woodworking began almost 10 years ago when his now wife’s birthday was fast approaching. He wanted to create something special but all he had was an old piece of timber and some tools in his father's garage. At the time, he knew very little about woodworking but honed his curiosity and determination to create a jewellery box. A spark that turned to flame, Matt’s passion for woodwork was alight.

Throughout his life, Matt’s fondest memories occurred around a dining table. It is a place of connection, celebration, laughter and shared experience. This is why Matt's focus is creating the perfect dining table for you and your family.

Unique — Carefully designed pieces that capture a creative style or idea.

Sustainable — Created to be an heirloom.

Commission Process

The commission process is a special one, being able to design a piece to your exact style, size and material. Below is a basic outline of the process.

  1. Send an email sharing your interest and timeframe, or directly fill out the design brief here.

  2. Matt will respond with a rough quote.

  3. Next, you will meet or video call to further discuss the project.

  4. A 50% downpayment for the project is required before commencing.

  5. Matt will then interpret your ideas and create sketches.

  6. After your review, he will create and share a 3D model.

  7. Once the drawing is signed off he will pick out the timber from local suppliers and mills.

  8. During the construction, you are welcome to visit and see the progress of your table.

  9. Matt will send photos throughout the construction phase.

  10. The final payment will be due on completion.

  11. Shipping or delivery will be organised depending on location.

Sustainabilty

Recently there has been a positive movement towards minimalism and purchasing quality products which do not become obsolete. Matt has been a strong believer in this for a long time. When he began furniture making, he only purchased the highest quality tools and materials. Not only does this produce less waste but gives joy when using them. Similarly, Matt creates pieces which stand the test of time and bring joy to the user.

He sources his timber from FSC certified suppliers, recycled timber, and fallen trees. Each piece is coated in a mixture of natural oils and waxes.

Prices

Matt will provide a quote for each piece based on the size, timber and design.

He can also work within a budget to create a high-quality piece.

Process

Creative Approach

Matt loves to break the mould and has found ways to blend storytelling into form. He recently created a table for an Australian cricketer and his family. The clients were enthusiastic to share their stories and be a part of the design process. They discussed the highs and lows of life, personal and professional achievements and hard work behind the scenes. Matt admired their humility and sacrifice and wanted to honour this in the piece. Matt portrayed sacrifice by disguising a key element of the table. At face value, the table is a beautifully finished piece, yet hidden underneath are carved grooves, representing all the sacrifices in their journey. Matt takes pride in knowing this piece will be used for generations to come.

Carefully Interpreted

The most important part of creating a piece is listening. Hearing the clients story, their ideas and their passions. Gently tease out the key concepts.

Thoughtfully Designed

The key here is to balance the simplicity of the piece with the main concept. Trying to do too much creates a piece which doesn’t know what it is. The secret is finding the perfect balance and marrying it with the aesthetic.

Uniquely Crafted

Matt handpicks each board then thoughtfully lays out the design. Accurately marking out the joinery and proceeding to shape the material to the desired shape.
